Chewie was born on June 26 2007 and is half Akita, half Labrador, Rottweiler and a couple of other breeds.

These are his parents with Hoot.
My former American neighbor and landlord (Hoot) was taking care of a local stray dog when the dog brought over a friend one day. A female pregnant friend to be precisely. So Hoot decided to take care of her of too. After about a couple of weeks she gave birth to 12 puppies of which 9 survived and Chewie was one of them.

After the puppies were born I just couldn’t help myself from dropping by at least twice a day. ![]()
From the beginning I helped with taking care of them and I even got them used to getting brushed and once they were old enough I helped with feeding them.
When they were about 4 weeks old, we got a call from our real estate agent that we could get the house we were interested in, in about a month so we decided to take one of the puppies. By that time I had already really gotten attached to them and knew them well so it wasn’t hard to pick out the one I wanted.

Chewie was one of the three puppies that were the most curious and playful and from that day on I focused especially on Chewie to get a even closer bond and I took him with me to meet Max so they could get used to each other.

We moved when he was 8 weeks old so once we were mostly settled in a day later, I picked him up and he’s been with me ever since. After we filled for divorce I even took him with me to the Netherlands.
Some funny things about Chewie.
-He loves to sleep on his back.

-He used to love to chase Max (my ex mother-in-laws dog) and chasing and being chased is still his favorite game.

-He has copied Max a lot and therefore used to to eat his food away from his bowl. He stopped doing that shortly after I moved into my own apartment in Februari 2011.
-He can be very protective and will let me know when he doesn’t trust someone. He is also a big wussy and can start barking whenever he sees something that wasn’t there before.
-He’s afraid of the sound of a empty garbage bag but goes into play mode when I put on the vacuum cleaner.
-Whenever I give him a treat it looks likes he’ll bite my fingers off but he’s actually really careful.
-He tries to eat every bug he comes across.
-He has killed and chewed on 3 wild mice that I know off.
-He has a lot of different breeds in him and luckily he seems to have picked up their best characteristics.
-Since 2010 his black fur is slowly turning brown and I wonder whether he’ll be fully brown/white in a few years.
-He used to chase down lizards in California and actually caught and killed a nearly 2 foot long one in the summer of 2008. He was generous enough to give it to me for which I thanked him and then distracted him so I could throw the poor thing away.
These are the pets he grew up with in America :
Casey

Max

Gato

I absolutely hate the fact that I had to leave them behind but Max is my ex-mother-in-laws, Casey loves my ex-husband best and I don’t want to rip the cats apart since Casey has been doing so much better ever since we got Gato.
Here are more pictures of Chewie that I just love.
P.s.: if you have checked out the rest of my website and if you are a Star Wars fan then you probably recognize his name.

Dear Friend Amanda,
What a wonderful companion Chewie must be. In appearance, he reminds me of our last pet, Bogie. She was a Cattahoula Hound (mix breed, Black Lab and Australian Sheppard) who passed three years ago. Same markings, same temperment, same affection. She was a twin whose brother, Ollie, drowned in an old hand-dug well on our property on Christmas Eve 1989. They were two month old puppies at the time.
My guess is that much like Bogie and Ollie, Chewie sort of chose you, rather than the other way around. Dogs are like that.
Warmest Regards,
Bill
